Brief Descriptions and Links to Smoking Prevention Educational "Package"
1. "Teenage Smokers Now" A three minute Video in which 7 teenage smokers confess how smoking has already seriously affected their lives in the areas of sports, athletic ability, dating, health and severe nicotine addiction. Although they all wanted to quit, they were unable to do so! Adolescents are uniquely susceptible to nicotine addiction and often become addicted for life. (See #3 below)

2. "Teenage Smokers Now and Later" - An award winning 24 minute Health and Science Video in which each of the Surgeon General's Warnings as printed on packs of cigarettes (cancers, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, heart disease and complications of pregnancy) are presented as medically illustrated patient histories followed by explanations of how smoking caused their diseases (Pathogenesis). All of the patients except one were from our medical center and wanted to warn youths not to make the same mistake they did. Adolescents are uniquely susceptible to nicotine addiction and often become addicted for life. (See # 3 below)

3. "How Nicotine Causes Addiction" - A nine minute audiovisual simple and concise PowerPoint Lecture on the mechanisms of nicotine addiction in the brain. This presentation applies not only to smoking tobacco cigarettes but also to vaping e-cigarettes (i.e. inhaling nicotine laced vapor from an electronic cigarette) that is an emerging and potentially major adolescent problem. The presentation explains and graphically shows how inhaled nicotine from a tobacco cigarette (and very likely from an e-cigarette) causes structural and functional changes in the brain to which adolescents are uniquely susceptible. The outward manifestation of this is nicotine addiction, often for life.

How The Materials Can Be Used At Schools and/or Youth Organizations
1. For Self study and On Line Learning:
Any or the entire Internet based Smoking Prevention Material (#1-7 above) is forwarded, thru School Nurses, Health Science Teachers, Phys. Ed. Teachers and/or interested Youth Group Leaders, to Middle School and High School Students for self-study and on line learning. The True - False Test (#7) with annotated answers is provided to assess knowledge and stress the main points of the Videos and PowerPoint Lectures (# 1-4) after they are reviewed.
2. For Presentation:
School Nurses, Health Science Teachers, Phys. ED. Teachers and/or interested Youth Group Leaders present both Videos "Teenage Smokers Now" and "Teenage Smokers Now and Later" (# 1 and 2 above) at their Middle School, High School or Youth Group and then answer class questions. These Videos show the real life consequences of smoking in both adolescents and adults. Prior to their Session, the Presenter reviews the material (#1-7) that prepares them to answer class questions and provides basic and practical background information on smoking. A Class Handout with " The Take Home Messages" (#6) can be provided to students at the time of the Session if desired. On request, I will provide a FREE copy of our award winning Health-Science DVD that contains both Smoking Prevention Videos, to any School Nurse or Teacher who wishes to present them or arrange to present them at their School. contact Arthur Pitchenik MD.
We feel that the above materials complement each other in a useful "Educational Package”. For example, the PowerPoint lectures review the mechanisms and consequences of nicotine addiction, the Videos show living examples of these in both adolescents and adults and the PDF files provide answers to the most common questions youths ask after seeing the Videos. The True - False Test with annotated answers then assesses knowledge of the above materials after they are reviewed and/or presented and stresses the main points.
